City of Kawartha Lakes schools celebrate Music Monday

On May 4, five schools in the City of Kawartha Lakes celebrated Music Monday, an annual national celebration founded by The Coalition for Music Education to raise awareness and understanding of the role that music education plays in Canadian culture, and to promote the benefits that music brings to young people.

The day-long initiative saw school bands from Lady Mackenzie Public School, Langton Public School, Lindsay Collegiate and Vocational Institute, Mariposa Elementary School, and Queen Victoria Public School all come together at the FLATO Academy Theatre in Lindsay.

Each band performed separate pieces, and then all joined together to create a mass band performance.

“It was an amazing experience for all of these students to experience the FLATO Academy Theatre stage, and the majestic sound it can make,” expressed MES music teacher, Beth Wilson. “To have over 80 kids making music together was an awesome example of collective effervescence. The importance of music education was made very clear.”

“Lady Mackenzie Public School recently experienced a fire affecting their music portable, in which they lost everything. With the community, parents, staff, and the Board lending a helping hand, the school band was able to come together to perform that day. It was amazing to see!” said Trillium Lakelands District School Board (TLDSB) educational assistant, Crystall Sherman. “Also shout out to Mrs. McFadden, who was instrumental in supporting the school and making this performance happen!”
